Application of Augmented Reality for Motorcyclist’s Sitting Posture Guidance

Motorcycles serve as the primary mode of transportation in Indonesia, but prolonged riding in improper positions severely increases the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. While ergonomic guidelines exist, daily commuters lack accessible, real-time tools to evaluate and correct their posture. This study presents the development and evaluation of a smartphone-based Augmented Reality (AR) application designed to provide real-time spatial calibration for motorcyclists. Built using Unity Engine, Vuforia Engine, and Blender, the application projects a 3D ergonomic rider model over a live camera feed, allowing users to align their posture with an ideal physical baseline. The research was done across a structured four-phase workflow: User Requirement Survey, App Development, App Testing, and User Feedback Evaluation. A preliminary survey (N=41) established that 95% of riders experience physical discomfort, primarily in the back and waist, and highly prefer real-time visual feedback. To evaluate the system, a repeated-measures experimental design was conducted with six motorcyclists aged 18 to 25 under two conditions: riding with and without AR guidance. Data collected via a 5-point Likert scale demonstrated strong user acceptance across three core dimensions: Ease of Use (averaging close to 4.0), Usability (reaching up to 4.8), and overall Satisfaction (ranging from 3.8 to 4.0). The results indicate that the intuitive 3D overlay effectively minimizes neck and back discomfort while enhancing posture awareness. This study highlights the potential of mobile AR as a practical, low-cost solution for cultivating healthier riding habits and reducing musculoskeletal risks among commuters.
